Description

A smart and quite unusual antique George III period mahogany side cabinet. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1790-1810 period.

It is of superb quality, with an interesting locking mechanism on the side rather than on the front. This has panelled door and sits on bracket feet, with two removable shelves inside.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear here and there remaining beneath the polish, with a gorgeous overall patina.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The George III period spans from 1760 to 1820, characterised by a transition from heavy Palladian designs to lighter, more refined neoclassical styles influenced by designers such as Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, and Thomas Sheraton.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly used solid mahogany, often complemented by secondary softwoods like pine or oak for drawer linings and carcases, frequently featuring finely figured veneers on primary surfaces.

Authentic pieces exhibit period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional timber shrinkage, appropriate oxidisation and patination on the interior surfaces, and period-appropriate hardware or ghost marks from original fittings.

Pairing dark wood period furniture with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary abstract art creates a balanced contrast that highlights the rich grain and historical craftsmanship of the timber.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels between 40 and 50 percent, keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and clean periodically using only a soft, dry cloth or high-quality microcrystalline wax.
