Description

Pair of Old Paris Porcelain Vases – Jacob Petit Style, Hand-Painted Floral Medallions, Mid-19th Century, c. 1850

An elegant and richly decorated pair of antique French porcelain vases in the style of Jacob Petit, dating to the mid-19th century. Crafted from fine porcelain, these vases exhibit a classic oval form with scalloped rims, relief-moulded bases, and Rococo-style ornamentation. They are exemplary of the luxurious design aesthetic associated with the Napoleon III period.

Each vase features a hand-painted central floral medallion framed by a deep green ground, highlighted with accents of blue, red, and gold. The reverse sides showcase additional painted decoration in complementary tones. Gilded embellishments throughout further enhance their refined and opulent character.

These vases reflect the influence of Jacob Petit (1796–1868), one of the most imaginative creators of Old Paris porcelain. Originally a designer at the Sèvres factory, Petit’s style is known for its bold shapes, vibrant colours, and lavish decoration—all evident in the design and palette of this pair.

Old Paris porcelain refers to pieces produced by various independent Parisian workshops between the late 18th and 19th centuries. Highly sought after by European nobility and collectors alike, these works embody the romantic, expressive spirit of French decorative art.

Old Paris porcelain refers to the diverse ceramic wares produced by various independent factories in and around Paris during the 18th and 19th centuries. Characterised by lavish gilding, vibrant hand-painted motifs, and exceptional craftsmanship, these pieces often reflect neoclassical, rococo, or romantic design influences.

These items were crafted from hard-paste porcelain, fired at extremely high temperatures to achieve durability and a smooth, vitreous body. Artisans applied rich polychrome enamel paints and heavily gilt accents by hand, often firing the pieces multiple times to set the metallic and coloured glazes.

Authentic pieces typically feature meticulous hand-painted details, vibrant colour palettes including deep greens and cobalts, and intricate relief moulding characteristic of the mid-19th century. While some bear factory signatures or artist ciphers, many unmarked pieces are attributed based on stylistic execution, paste quality, and gilding techniques.

These decorative vessels can be displayed as statement centrepieces on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or open shelving unit. Pairing ornate antique ceramics with minimalist modern furnishings creates a striking contrast that highlights their craftsmanship without cluttering the space.

Antique porcelain should be cleaned gently using a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. If washing is necessary, use lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive soap, avoiding harsh chemicals or submerging pieces with delicate gilding for prolonged periods to prevent wear.
