FAQs

A press cupboard is a traditional piece of storage furniture originating in the seventeenth century, primarily used for storing folded clothes, linen, and valuables before the widespread use of modern wardrobes.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid English oak using traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, pegged frames, and hand-carved panels rather than modern metal fasteners.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-tooled surfaces, traditional tool marks, natural timber shrinkage, period-correct iron hinges and latches, and the absence of modern machine-sawn timber.

An antique oak press cupboard provides a striking focal point in a contemporary room, contrasting with minimalist surroundings and serving as a functional storage solution or statement display piece.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the timber.
