This pair of eighteenth-century Rococo vases and covers is made from white soft-paste porcelain decorated with polychrome enamel paint and gold leaf detailing. Each urn-shaped vessel stands on a fluted pedestal base with raised dots, rises to a central section featuring applied female masks framed by handmade floral encrustations, and culminates in a reticulated lattice rim with a matching domed lid topped by a bird finial. Painted insects adorn the white glazed surfaces alongside frilled green-tinted borders above the pedestals. Measuring 26 cm high, 11.5 cm wide, and 11.5 cm deep, these decorative objects fit suitably on a mantelpiece within an English Country House interior setting, adding traditional ceramic artistry to a living room or parlour surface.

Derby frill vases were produced in England during the mid-to-late 18th century, primarily during the Rococo period. They served as decorative potpourri vessels, designed with pierced covers and necks to allow dried botanicals to fragrance formal reception rooms.

These vases were crafted using soft-paste porcelain, featuring hand-sculpted floral encrustations, applied female masks, and reticulated latticework. Decoration was completed with polychrome enamel painting and gilded accents before firing.

Authentication involves inspecting the soft-paste body, which often displays patch marks on the underside of the base from kiln pads. Hand-painted floral motifs, delicate hand-modelled encrustations, and early factory marks assist identification.

A pair of frill vases can be displayed symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to establish a focal point. Their intricate detail contrasts effectively against minimalist backdrop tones or curated gallery walls.

Preservation requires dusting with a soft, dry brush or low-pressure air blower to avoid snagging fragile petals. Water and chemical detergents should be avoided on delicate areas to prevent deterioration of the gilding and enamels.
