Sugar casters, also known as dredgers, evolved from earlier spice containers as granulated and refined sugar became more accessible during the 17th and 18th centuries, with Edwardian examples frequently incorporating neoclassical or floral motifs.

These items are typically constructed from sterling silver featuring pierced domed lids and often incorporate cobalt blue glass liners held within pierced or reticulated silver mounts.

Authentic pieces carry British hallmarks stamped on the metal components, indicating the assay office city such as Chester, the standard mark for sterling silver, and a date letter corresponding to the Edwardian period.

Such pieces function effectively as decorative tabletop objects on sideboards or open shelving, adding reflective metallic texture and a touch of historical contrast to contemporary spaces.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the natural patina from the metal and damage glass liners.
