FAQs

Nineteenth-century French seating often draws inspiration from earlier royal periods such as Louis XV and Louis XVI, characterised by flowing cabriole legs, carved wooden frames, and sophisticated painted or gilded finishes.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods like beech or walnut, featuring traditional joinery, hand-carved detailing, and applied layers of gesso, paint, or gold leaf known as parcel-gilding.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-carved wooden construction, the ageing patterns of the paint and gilding, traditional joinery methods, and the type of webbing and stuffing used beneath the upholstery.

Such pieces function well as accent seating or occasional rests in living rooms and bedrooms, providing a contrasting classical element when paired with contemporary furnishings and neutral palettes.

Maintain the finish by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can degrade the aged paint or gold leaf, and keeping the item away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity.
