Description

This is a Georgian, English, engraved facet-cut stem wine or ale glass dating from the end of the 18th century, c1770, and engraved in the atelier of James Giles.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a polished out pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ovoid-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm. (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved and polished with an OXO (egg and dart) border above the Giles' signature engraving of bucrania and paterae within twisted laurel wreaths. The bowl sits on a diamond facet cut stem, the facets reaching up into the lower part of the bowl where they end as petal flutes. The stem leads to a conical foot which measures 6.8 cm. (2.7 inches) in diameter. The glass is 12.6 cm (5 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

It is made from lead metal weighing 170 g. (~ 6 oz.).

Georgian glassware is characterised by heavy lead-metal composition, hand-blown forms, and distinctive decorative techniques such as facet-cutting, air twists, and intricate diamond-point or wheel engraving.

These vessels were typically crafted from heavy flint glass, often referred to as lead crystal, which contained a high proportion of lead oxide to impart clarity, weight, and resonance.

Authentic pieces often feature pontil marks on the underside of the foot, subtle irregularities or bubbles within the metal from hand-blowing, and characteristic wear patterns appropriate for their age.

Displaying period stemware within glass-fronted cabinets, open shelving, or on serving trays adds textural contrast and historical depth to modern dining spaces.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and abrasive materials to protect the delicate surface and engraving.
