Description

A delightful set of six cut glass plates, dating from the Victorian period. The plates have frosted bodies with a drop centre featuring a starburst cut star. These attractive examples are probably ice plates and would have been used with crushed ice and a bowl set on them, to keep food chilled. Nowadays, they would make useful dessert or side plates and a surviving set of six is a good find. Dimensions below.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian glassware encompasses a wide range of decorative and functional items produced during the 19th century, often characterised by intricate wheel-cut motifs, acid etching, and frosted finishes used for dining and dessert courses.

These pieces were typically crafted from lead crystal or flint glass, shaped using mould-pressed or blown methods, and finished with hand-cut geometric or starburst patterns alongside acid-etched frosted sections.

Authentic items often feature pontil marks on the underside, heavy lead content weight, subtle surface wear consistent with age, and hand-cut details that display slight irregularities absent in modern machine-made reproductions.

They can be displayed upright on plate stands within glass-fronted cabinets, used as decorative centrepieces on dining tables, or incorporated into curated tablescapes for special occasions.

Antique glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and harsh abrasive cleaners to preserve the delicate frosted and cut surfaces.
