Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of mid-nineteenth-century charger plates originates from the Grand Regency style. Formed from heavy silver plate with a bright silver finish, the items exhibit a circular profile featuring a polished central well and a clean reeded rim moulding. Each heavy platter shows faint surface scratching along with maker marks for SB GG and reverse inscriptions recording presentations to the Ardrossan New Church in 1851. The solid plates measure 2.5 cm high, 35.5 cm wide, and 35.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, these charger plates suit display on a dining room sideboard top or use as serving salvers during formal meals. The durable silver-plated construction allows for practical presentation while maintaining historical character. These sizeable platters provide an impressive metalware accent for traditional table settings.

FAQs

Charger plates, also known as service plates or underplates, are large decorative base plates used during formal dining courses. Historically popular in European formal dining, they remain on the table to preserve the arrangement and catch spills before main course plates are laid.

Silver-plated charger plates typically feature a base metal core, such as copper or a nickel alloy, electroplated with a layer of pure silver. The outer rim is frequently finished with cast or moulded detailing such as reeding or gadrooning for structural rigidity and aesthetic style.

Authentic silver-plated items generally bear makers marks, EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver) stamps, or catalogue sequence numbers stamped on the underside. Additionally, genuine pieces exhibit natural surface patina, light surface wear from use, and substantial weight compared to modern lightweight reproductions.

Silver chargers can be layered under porcelain dinnerware during formal dinner settings or displayed upright on plate stands inside glazed cabinets. They also serve effectively as decorative trays on sideboards or console tables to group decanters and glassware.

Silver plate should be washed by hand using warm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive scouring pads that can wear down the surface layer. Tarnish can be removed using a non-abrasive silver polish applied gently with a soft cotton cloth before buffing to a high shine.
