Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Panelled pine backboards: traditional regional cabinet work of the late 18th century.
Greek key inlay beneath the cornice: neoclassical ornament from the George III period.
Thick flame mahogany veneers: natural shrinkage lines visible along the wood grain.
Pierced cast brass escutcheons: original fittings secured with slotted screws.

This Georgian armoire is an 18th-century Channel Island press cupboard produced in Jersey around 1780. Constructed from warm mahogany brown flame mahogany with brass hardware, the piece presents a striking figured grain timber finish. Key visible details include a moulded cornice, double doors with multiple fielded panels, ornate pierced brass escutcheons, and a scalloped shaped lower apron standing on short bracket feet. The interior houses hanging rails and storage shelves, though the press originally contained linen shelves. Disassembling into eight components, the wardrobe measures 205 cm high, 127 cm wide, and 54 cm deep to accommodate transport through narrow access points. Positioned within a domestic interior, the wardrobe serves as a practical storage solution for clothing and textiles in a bedroom or dressing room. The substantial proportions provide ample capacity for hanging garments and footwear while maintaining traditional English country house character. The modular construction ensures straightforward assembly in challenging spaces such as period properties with restricted doorways or stairwells.

A Channel Island press cupboard is an 18th-century storage piece originating from Guernsey or Jersey, typically characterised by a moulded cornice, fielded panel doors, and a decorative shaped apron at the base.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary timber carcasses such as pine or oak, fitted together using hand-cut mortise-and-tenon joints and dovetailing.

Authenticity can be determined by examining hand-sawn tool marks on the reverse, original brass escutcheons, hand-cut dovetail construction, and age-related shrinkage across solid wood panels.

A large mahogany press functions as a central focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living area, offering concealed functional storage while adding dark timber tones to a modern design scheme.

Maintain mahogany timber by positioning it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year.
