FAQs

French gilt bronze, often referred to as ormolu, gained prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries under royal patronage, notably during the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI. Craftsmen utilised a mercury gilding process to apply a fine layer of gold to cast bronze, creating objects prized for their lustre and intricate detailing.

Traditional candlesticks from this period were typically produced using lost-wax casting or sand casting methods with copper alloy bases such as bronze or brass. The pieces were then hand-chased to sharpen the details before undergoing fire-gilding or chemical plating to achieve the characteristic golden surface.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy construction, hand-finished chasing details with crisp relief, and signs of age such as oxidation or wear to the gilding on high-touch areas. Examining the casting seams, tool marks on the underside, and the specific composition of the metal alloy helps determine the period.

These decorative objects can be integrated into contemporary spaces by placing them on mantelpieces, sideboards, or dining tables to introduce textural contrast and metallic warmth. Pairing them with neutral candles allows the ornate metalwork to serve as a focal point without overwhelming the room.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh commercial metal cleaners, abrasive cloths, or chemical solvents that can strip the delicate gilt layer. Keeping items away from direct moisture and handling them with clean hands prevents oils from accelerating tarnishing.
