Fine Pair of Louis Xvi Style Gilt Bronze Candlesticks

18th century
Description

FINE PAIR OF LOUIS XVI STYLE GILT BRONZE CANDLESTICKS

A fine pair of antique gilded bronze French ormolu candlesticks in the Louis XVI style.

They are finely cast and characterised by their intricate neoclassical ornamentation which is typical of the Louis XVI period, and focusses on symmetry and elegance rather than the heavy, scrolling curves found in earlier Rococo styles.

The candle nozzle features a beaded rim on its drip pan. The socket itself is decorated with a "leaf and dart" classical foliate pattern. The central pillar is tapered and fluted, mimicking the look of classical Greek columns and it is punctuated by various decorative "knops" (rings) that add further texture and visual appeal.

The broad, circular base is highly ornate and features a heavy acanthus leaf motif that radiates outwards sitting atop a stepped foundation with further beaded or "guilloché" (braided) detailing.

Their finish is rich and shimmers and the natural patina in the recessed areas of the casting, which highlights the depth of this fine metalwork.

Weighty and of fine quality they are perfect to add a touch of decadence to the dining table or ornamentation to a mantlepiece and would suit both a classic or contemporary interior setting.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style metalwork originated in late 18th-century France as a return to classical Greek and Roman aesthetics following the Rococo period. Design traits include symmetrical proportions, fluted columns, acanthus leaf embellishments, beaded borders, and rosette details.

Historically, gilt bronze or ormolu pieces were created using the lost-wax casting technique. Once cast, artisans chased the metal by hand to refine surface details before applying a mercury-gilding process to bond a layer of gold to the bronze surface.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast metal construction, precise hand-chasing on decorative elements, and individual threaded components inside the stem. Wear to the gilding often reveals natural oxidisation or bare bronze underneath on contact points.

A pair of gilt candlesticks adds warm metallic accents when positioned symmetrically at either end of a mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard. They contrast well against matte wall surfaces and dark wood or stone tops.

Clean gilt bronze using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft bristles brush to remove dust from detailed crevices. Avoid chemical cleaners, metal polishes, or water, as abrasive treatments can strip or damage original gilded surfaces.
