Ormolu refers to the technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold to a bronze object, a process widely used in France and England during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to create a rich, durable golden finish.

These pieces are typically cast in bronze or brass using traditional lost-wax or sand-casting methods, followed by hand-chasing to sharpen the details and the application of mercury gilding.

Authentic items display crisp, hand-finished detailing from chasing tools, natural patination of the underlying metal, and assembly via threaded screws or pegs rather than modern welding.

They can be used to anchor a mantelpiece or sideboard arrangement, introducing a layer of metallic warmth that contrasts effectively against matte painted walls or dark wood surfaces.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid all abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners, which can strip the delicate surface layer and damage the historic patina.
