Georgian linen presses evolved during the 18th century as households required specialised furniture to store household linen flat before the widespread use of hangers, typically featuring upper shelving enclosed by doors and lower drawers for smaller garments.

These pieces were constructed primarily from native timbers such as oak, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, pegged frame-and-panel doors, and brass or wooden hardware.

Authenticity is identified through hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular grain patterns, traditional joinery methods like pegged joints, hand-wrought iron or brass fixings, and signs of age-related oxidisation and wear within the interior.

An antique oak press serves as a focal storage piece in a bedroom or hallway, contrasting effectively against neutral walls and modern minimalist furniture to add architectural weight and historical texture.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically feeding the timber with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood and protect the finish.
