Victorian scent bottles were essential personal accessories during the 19th century, used to carry perfumes or smelling salts to combat faintness caused by tight corsetry. They were crafted in diverse materials including coloured glass, porcelain, and precious metals.

These bottles typically combined blown or moulded colored glass or crystal bodies with fitted caps made from sterling silver, gilt metal, or brass, often featuring intricate repousse or engraved decoration.

Authenticity is determined by examining the manufacturing techniques, such as pontil marks on glass, hallmarks on silver caps, and the quality of hand-cut facets. Wear patterns and patination appropriate to the 19th century also aid verification.

Antique scent bottles can be displayed on mirrored trays, dressing tables, or bathroom shelves where natural light can pass through the coloured glass, adding a subtle touch of historic elegance to contemporary schemes.

Clean the glass gently with lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals. Silver components should be maintained with a soft microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish, taking care to keep polish away from the glass surface.
