Alexandrite glass, often containing neodymium oxide, is a type of art glass that changes colour under different lighting conditions, typically shifting between purple in incandescent light and blue or green in daylight. It gained popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, notably produced by prominent makers like Thomas Webb and Sons during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Antique art glasses were crafted using high-grade silica combined with various metallic oxides to achieve specific optical effects and colours. Skilled artisans utilised techniques such as glassblowing, mould-blowing, optical ribbing, and hand-cutting or engraving to shape and texture each piece.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks on the base, indicating hand-blown manufacturing, alongside consistent weight, crisp facet work, and period-appropriate wear such as fine base scratching. Testing under different light sources confirms the characteristic colour-shift of neodymium or alexandrite compositions.

Antique coloured glassware adds subtle chromatic interest and historic texture when displayed on open shelving, within glass-fronted cabinets, or used as a striking tablescape accent. Pairing these items with neutral backgrounds allows their unique light-reactive properties to remain the visual focus.

Antique glass should always be hand-washed in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock. It is recommended to line washing surfaces with a towel and store pieces securely away from direct, prolonged sunlight.
