FAQs

Chinoiserie is the European imitation and interpretation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, which gained immense popularity in British furniture design during the Georgian period, particularly in the 18th century.

Japanned furniture typically utilised a wooden carcase coated in multiple layers of resin varnish, known as japanning, followed by hand-painted or raised gilt motifs depicting oriental landscapes, figures, and flora.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural ageing such as fine craquelure in the lacquer, hand-forged iron or brass hardware, traditional timber construction methods like dovetailing, and genuine wear patterns consistent with centuries of use.

Such a piece works effectively as a focal point in a minimalist or maximalist room, contrasting against plain painted walls to highlight its intricate metallic details and historical texture.

Preserve japanned surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the lacquer from cracking, and clean only with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without chemical polishes.
