Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This late eighteenth-century corner cupboard follows a bowfront profile in pine, finished with an original tempera painted surface and fitted with wrought iron H-hinges. The front depicts a classical figurative scene with a crowned monarch, courtiers, draped curtains, and a chequerboard floor motif rendered in multicolour shades of red, blue, green, yellow, and black. A central keyhole is visible on the double doors, beneath an arched cornice molding at the top edge. The piece measures 87 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 35.5 cm deep. Positioned in an empty corner, the cupboard serves as functional wall-mounted storage in a hallway, living room, or study. The surface shows aged patina across the painted figures and the monochrome checkered base pattern, retaining its structural form and decorative hardware. It provides enclosed shelving behind the two hinged doors while adding a distinct visual focus to interior spaces seeking European folk art style.

FAQs

Hanging corner cupboards are space-saving storage units popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to mount directly into the angle of two meeting walls. Often decorated with polychrome folk art paintings, they served both utilitarian and decorative purposes in historic domestic interiors.

These cupboards were typically constructed from local softwoods such as pine or hardwoods such as oak, joined using hand-cut dovetails or wooden pegs. The exterior surfaces were finished with mineral-based paints or tempera, and doors were attached using hand-forged iron hinges.

Authentic period pieces display signs of natural age including surface craquelure, uneven timber shrinkage, and hand-planed backboards. Wrought iron hardware showing hand-hammered marks and original keyhole escutcheons also indicate genuine historical construction.

Mount the cupboard in an unutilised corner of a dining room, hallway, or kitchen to introduce architectural interest and historic texture. Pairing it with neutral wall finishes allows the hand-painted artwork and aged timber surface to act as an focal feature.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding water, solvents, or abrasive chemical cleaners that could strip delicate historical paint layers. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the timber panels from movement and paint flaking.
