This Oriental blanket box is an antique camphor wood chest from the 1930s, finished in a honey-brown timber colour with stepped bracket feet and a round brass lock plate. The rectangular lid and front panel display intricate hand-carved relief scenes of figures, trees, and buildings, set within detailed floral borders and raised mouldings. Measuring 46 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 44 cm deep, it provides practical storage for blankets and linens while filling a room with the natural fragrance of camphor wood. Positioned in a bedroom, dressing room, or gentleman's library, this trunk serves as both a functional storage piece and a decorative coffee table or bench base. The hinged lid lifts to reveal a clean interior complete with a lattice tray at the top, and the original brass hardware remains securely fastened on the front. Its compact proportions allow it to sit comfortably at the foot of a bed or beneath a window, adding warmth and traditional character to domestic interiors.

FAQs

A camphor wood chest is a traditional oriental storage trunk constructed from the timber of the Cinnamomum camphora tree, historically produced in East Asia for storing and exporting textiles, clothing, and linens.

These chests are typically built from solid camphor wood or constructed with a camphor lining, featuring external timber relief carvings and cast brass lock plates or escutcheons.

Authentic pieces retain a distinct aromatic fragrance from the natural essential oils in the wood, paired with hand-carved exterior surface paneling and traditional joinery.

A carved camphor chest functions as a low coffee table in a living room, a blanket storage box at the foot of a bed, or a decorative hallway feature.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, dry cloth, position the piece away from direct heat sources to limit timber shrinkage, and apply a light beeswax polish periodically.
