This nineteenth-century French provincial coffer originates from Burgundy and takes the form of a walnut dough proving table. The piece exhibits a warm brown timber colour with visible wood grain, a flat rectangular lid with a moulded edge, and a distinctive tapered trough body resting on a low timber base with square legs. The construction incorporates chunky corner joints and a simple moulded base rim. The item measures 54 cm high, 121 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. In a modern home, this storage piece functions effectively as a coffee table or a sofa table in a living room, combining traditional rustic farmhouse design with practical utility. The low profile and flat surface provide a stable platform for everyday display or surface use while offering concealed internal space.

A dough box, known as a petrin in France, is a traditional wooden chest historically used in bakeries and homes for kneading and proving bread dough.

These pieces were typically crafted from durable solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or fruitwood, constructed with pegged joinery to withstand daily utility.

Authentic examples display hand-planed wood surfaces, tapered trough sides, historic joinery techniques, and natural wear patterns consistent with practical historic usage.

These utilitarian forms are frequently repurposed as statement coffee tables, unique end-of-bed storage trunks, or characterful hallway chests.

Keep the wood clean by dusting with a lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to preserve the timber and maintain its patinated finish.
