Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Pegged mortise-and-tenon joints to the frame: traditional vernacular cabinetmaking.
Ogee-arched fielded panels on the upper doors: regional Welsh pattern.
Quarter-sawn oak showing medullary rays: riven native timber.
Hand-planed backboards with oxidised darkening inside: natural passage of time.
Turned drop pendants below the canopy cornice: regional decorative detail.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Welsh oak deuddarn stands 205 cm high, 138 cm wide, and 54 cm deep in a substantial two-tier profile. The warm brown timber displays prominent figuring under a clear polished finish, complemented by a projecting canopy with moulded cornice, turned drop pendants, and ogee pointed arch panel doors. Below the upper tier, three frieze drawers sit above a central blind double panel flanked by further panelled doors, all fitted with small turned wooden knobs and supported on bracket feet. Practical storage meets traditional country style in this press cupboard, making it suitable for a dining room, kitchen, or hallway. The lower cabinet and upper cupboards provide extensive concealed shelving space for tableware, linens, or dry goods, while the wide top surface accommodates decorative objects. The piece integrates easily into rural, rustic, or traditional interior schemes as a functional focal point.

FAQs

A deuddarn is a traditional Welsh two-tier press cupboard originating in the 17th to 19th centuries, translated literally from Welsh as two parts. It typically features a shallow upper cupboard section with panelled doors over a larger base containing drawers and lower cupboards.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from local native oak, often incorporating quarter-sawn oak to highlight natural grain patterns. Traditional joinery techniques include peg construction, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, raised-and-fielded panels, and hand-planed back boards.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-hewn oak construction, historical timber shrinkage, and hand-cut dovetails. Regional Welsh design characteristics include ogee-arched top door panels, turned drop pendants beneath the upper cornice, and original turned wooden knobs or brass escutcheons.

A deuddarn serves as a substantial focal piece in modern country kitchens, dining spaces, or large entryways. Juxtaposing its deep timber tones against neutral plaster walls, limewashed surfaces, or contemporary ceramics balances traditional regional heritage with modern interior aesthetics.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice per year to preserve the patination. Position the piece away from direct heat sources, radiators, and damp walls to prevent timber movement, cracking, or joint separation.
