A sugar caster, also known as a sugar castor or dredger, is a perforated container traditionally used for sprinkling fine sugar onto desserts and pastries, dating back to the late seventeenth century.

These pieces typically combine hand-cut or moulded lead crystal glass bodies with hallmarked sterling silver screw-on pierced lids, often featuring finials and geometric or floral pierced designs.

Authenticity is verified by examining the British hallmarks stamped on the silver rim or lid, which indicate the assay office, standard mark, date letter, and makers mark.

They can be displayed on a dining table centre, within a glazed cabinet, or styled on a sideboard to add reflective metallic touches and historical texture to a scheme.

Clean the crystal with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and polish the silver components periodically with a specialized non-abrasive silver cloth to prevent tarnish build-up.
