FAQs

During the Victorian era, functional items for the home often featured whimsical or naturalistic designs, combining metals like silver plate with organic elements such as horn, hoof, and bone to appeal to Victorian sensibilities.

These pieces typically utilised a base metal core coated in electroplated silver, supported by natural materials like cattle horn or wood, and assembled with hand-soldered joints and mechanical fasteners.

Authentic pieces from this period often display characteristic wear to the silver plating, period-specific makers marks, traditional hand-finishing techniques, and natural ageing patinas on the organic components.

This type of objet dart works well as a focal point on a study desk, sideboard, or bookshelf, adding historical texture and a conversation piece to curated interior schemes.

Maintain silver plate using non-abrasive cleaning cloths specifically formulated for plated items, avoid harsh chemical dips, and keep organic materials like horn away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
