Nineteenth-century Chinese leather trunks were traditionally crafted for travel and storage of valuable textiles and documents, often constructed using lacquered or treated ox hide over a wooden frame.

These pieces typically feature a sturdy softwood core, such as pine or cedar, encased in embossed or tooled leather, secured with brass tacks, and fitted with metal hardware for portability.

Authenticity is identified through period-correct joinery, natural wear patterns on the hide, traditional Chinese brass hardware, and the presence of handmade structural components rather than modern fasteners.

An antique trunk serves as a functional coffee table, an end-of-bed storage bench, or a statement anchor piece in a living room, adding texture and historical depth to contemporary schemes.

Preservation involves keeping the piece out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable humidity levels, and occasionally treating the leather with conservation-grade microcrystalline wax to prevent drying and cracking.
