Victorian decorative glassware is characterised by exuberant ornamentation, often incorporating vibrant colours, heavy gilding, and applied enamel detailing reflecting the periods eclectic tastes.

These pieces were typically crafted using mould-blown or free-blown glass, finished with hand-painted enamel floral motifs and hand-applied gold leaf gilding.

Authenticity is determined by examining the pontil mark on the base, the wear to the hand-applied gilding, the consistency of the enamel work, and the specific characteristics of 19th-century glass chemistry.

These items work well as focal points on dressing tables, mantelpieces, or open shelving, where light can pass through the coloured glass to highlight the enamel and gilt details.

Clean antique glass gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive cloths that can damage delicate surface gilding and enamel.
