Boulle work is an elaborate marquetry technique named after Andre-Charles Boulle, master cabinetmaker to Louis XIV, involving the inlay of tortoiseshell and brass.

These pieces typically feature an oak or pine carcase veneered with tortoiseshell and engraved brass, adorned with cast and gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the hand-chased quality of the gilt bronze mounts, the precise cut of the marquetry, and the makers signature on the enamel dial or movement.

Placing the clock as a focal point on a mantelpiece or console table adds a layer of historical texture and metallic contrast to contemporary spaces.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to protect the delicate tortoiseshell veneer, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced periodically.
