This large two-tier display cabinet dates from 1860 in the English Country style. It is made from oak with a dark blue painted exterior finish and sliding glass doors across both the upper and lower sections. The interior is painted white and is fitted with adjustable shelves, visible behind the glazed panels. A dentil moulding runs along the moulded cornice at the top, and the base rests on small castors. Wear is visible around the edges of the dark blue painted wood. The piece measures 258 cm high, 309 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. It provides substantial storage for books and display objects in a large living room, library, or hallway.

FAQs

Glazed display cabinets emerged during the 18th and 19th centuries to store and showcase collections of books, porcelain, and glassware while protecting contents from dust and soot.

These cabinets are constructed predominantly from solid timbers such as pine or oak, fitted with clear glass panes and finished with painted frames and contrast interior backings.

Authenticity can be determined by examining historic paint layers, hand-cut joinery, period glass with subtle distortion, and natural wear patterns along handles and sliding door tracks.

Position the piece as a focal point against a neutral wall, filling the shelves with contrast-coloured ceramics, folded linens, or curated book series while maintaining negative space.

Dust surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth, clean glass panels with a mild solution avoiding painted timber borders, and position the cabinet away from direct heat sources to prevent paint flaking.
