Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region and shipped via the port of Imari. Developed during the 17th century, it is characterised by rich, hand-painted decorations featuring underglaze cobalt blue paired with overglaze iron-red and gilding.

Imari wares are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay to create durable hard-paste porcelain. Decorative elements are painted using underglaze cobalt blue before firing, after which iron-red enamels and gold leaf are applied and fired in a secondary low-temperature kiln.
