Regency Bracket Clock Having A Mahogany Arched Top Case. Circa 1810.
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:M. C. Taylor
A superior than usual example in both condition and quality of a classic style Regency period table clock.
The eight day duration, double fusee, 5 pillar movement with Anchor recoil escapement and rack striking the hours on a fine-toned rear mounted bell. The movement plates are shouldered and the rear plate has neat border engraving of semi-circles consisting of wriggle work. The back cock, fixing brackets and pendulum transit holdfast are also engraved. The pendulum rod has a regulation nut cradle and the rod is graduated. The movement also has pull repeat striking.
Behind a 7'' diameter, bowed painted dial that retains its base paint. It is rimmed with a brass sleeve and has a black minute track and Roman hour numerals. The gilded brass hands are matching ''spade'' style. The dial is covered with a cast brass locking bezel of low profile with a snapped-in bowed glass.
The arched top mahogany case has a top-mounted, cast brass swinging carrying handle. The sides have cast br...ass ''fish scale'' arched sound frets that are backed with cloth. The well-figured front is trimmed around the edge with brass beading and the lower portion is strung with various woods and follows the profile. The rear has a full-size arched and glazed locking door. The short plinth has a moulded top edge and the clock sits upon four, cast brass ''ogee'' feet.
Dimensions: 17'' high including the handle x 10'' wide x 6 1/2'' deep at the feet.
Condition: The movement is working well and striking correctly. It appears to have recently been overhauled to a professional standard. The dial has been sympathetically restored and the paint is sound. The case also has been carefully conserved and is extremely good. There are historic stress cracks to the side veneer due to 200 years of shrinkage but this will not worsen and in my opinion is of no concern. Both locks are original and working.
Price: The price is for the clock in it''s present and working condition. A price and timescale for any work required by the purchaser can be advised upon enquiry.
