Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ware named after the port of Imari, though produced in the Arita region. It is characteristically decorated in underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamelling and gilded highlights, frequently depicting floral, faunal, and geometric motifs within segmented panels.

Imari pieces are made from kaolin clay kaolinite porcelain fired at high temperatures. The production process involves initial firing with underglaze blue, followed by hand-application of enamel colours like iron-red and gold embellishments, requiring multiple subsequent kiln firings to set the pigments.

Authentic Imari exhibits slight irregularities from manual throwing and moulding, characteristic spur marks on the unglazed foot rim, and hand-painted variations in decoration. Overglaze enamels typically feature distinct textural raise above the glaze surface alongside natural age wear to the gilding.
