Tantaluses were invented in the Victorian era as a secure way to store alcoholic beverages, preventing domestic staff from consuming the contents. Combining them with a games compendium became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as social entertaining gained prominence in middle and upper-class homes.

These pieces were typically crafted from sturdy hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring brass hardware, mirrored backplates, and tooled leather accents. The accompanying decanters and glassware were usually heavy-cut lead crystal with matching stoppers.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetail joints, patinated brass fittings with slot-head screws, and hand-blown or heavy-moulded crystal glass. Maker marks on the locks, such as Betjemann, also help verify authenticity.

This item serves as a striking focal point when placed on a sideboard, home bar, or side table in a study or living room. It pairs well with traditional dark wood furniture as well as contrasting mid-century or modern minimalist spaces to add historical character.

Maintain the timber by cleaning with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying occasional applications of appropriate beeswax to nourish the grain. The crystal decanters should be washed by hand with warm, soapy water, avoiding harsh abrasives to preserve the clarity and cut of the glass.
