Early 19th Century Swedish Painted Blanket Box

19th century
Description

Early 19th century swedish painted blanket box circa 1816.

Traditional rag painted swedish box which is initialed and dated 1816.  flat top lid which makes it ideal for doubling up as a coffee/occasional table.

Red/brown main colour scheme, with a plain interior.  original metalwork with carrying handles to the side.

Minor shrinkage between wood joins, surface marks and fading to paintwork.  losses to both bottom sections of hinges on the reverse, which causes the top to slightly rock when it's open, but still functions for everyday use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Swedish folk art blanket boxes, primarily produced during the 18th and 19th centuries, are traditional wooden storage trunks decorated with hand-painted inscriptions, dates, and regional motifs often created to mark weddings or family milestones.

These trunks were constructed from local softwoods such as pine or fir, using hand-cut dovetail joinery and reinforced with hand-forged iron corner straps, hinges, and side carrying handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-forged ironwork, natural surface wear around handles and keyholes, historic inscriptions or initials, and joinery techniques consistent with pre-industrial woodwork.

A rustic blanket box functions as a coffee table in a living room, extra storage at the foot of a bed, or a decorative bench trunk in a hallway or foyer.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding chemical solvents that may damage historical pigments, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources, and treating metal fittings with wax to prevent rust.
