This is a handsome mahogany, fusee mantel clock by an eminent maker.
The 8 day duration, 5 pillar, double fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, rack and starwheel sriking of the hours on a tuned, rear-mounted bell. Also having rear operated strike/silent feature, pull cord strike repeating, shouldered plates, knopped pillars and a pendulum rod cradle with engraved graduated scale.
Behind a 6'' diameter, bowed, white enamel dial with an outer divided minute circle and black Roman hour numerals also, the maker''s name ''GRANT Fleet Street LONDON'' and ''No.609'' applied in an arc to the upper dial portion. The matching blued steel hands are of spade design and the locking cast brass bezel has ornamentation and a snapped-in bowed glass.
Contained in a stylish figured mahogany case with a flat top that has a moulded edge, canted front corners, geometric ebony stringing, a short plinth with moulded top edge and sitting upon four short block feet. The sides have upper panels
... that are edged with ebony and further ebony stringing to the lower portions. The pull repeat exits the case through the right hand side. The rear of the case has a glazed and locking rectangular door.
Though unrestored, this is an exceptional clock because of its style, originality, quality and it''s eminent maker. John Grant junior was born in 1792 and became free of the Clockmaker''s Company in 1817. He became Master of the Company no less than 5 times during his career. His father of the same name was also an eminent Clockmaker.
If this clock is restored it will be exceptionally attractive and would literally come alive.
Dimensions: 13'' high x 9 1/2'' wide x 6 1/4'' deep.
Condition: The movement is in full working order but would greatly benefit from an overhaul. The transit locking block and knob have been removed and one bracket screw is a poor replacement. The dial is good but has slight damage above the numeral XII. The case is unrestored. The top veneer has lifted slightly at the edges through age and there are also signs of wear and minor damage to other areas - the most noticeable being the edge by the rear door keyhole. The case back has been stained black and there are signs of historical repairs to various areas of moulding. Both of the locks are original and in working order with keys present.
Price: The price for this clock is in its present and working condition. A price and timescale for any work required by the purchaser can be advised upon enquiry. This is such a good clock that I would advise a restored retail value of around £8,000.
