A very collectable and early English, weight driven wall clock.
The delicately made, 30 hour duration, brass, weight driven movement with Verge escapement and short internal pendulum. Also having a rear-mounted alarum that sounds on a top-mounted bell.
The square brass dial is only 4 3/4'' x 4 3/4'' in size. It has winged putti cast brass corner spandrels, an engraved chapter ring with outer minute track and Arabic 5''s within it, Roman hour numerals, Fleur-de-lys half hour markings and an inner quarter track. The dial centre is matted and bears the alarum setting disc with a patterned centre and Arabic hour numerals. The blackened steel hands are shaped.
Contained in a solid oak, hooded case of simple design. The glazed hood is lifting and sits upon a baseboard with a top moulding and a shaped skirt that incorporates the bracket style lower portion. The full-length backboard has an inverted break-arch bottom.
This little clock is rare, not only because of its age (330 year
...s old) but, also because of its diminutive size, condition - even though parts are missing and also because it was made with two hands rather than the usual hour hand only - therefore, it indicates minutes on the chapter ring. The fact that it is not signed suggests that it was made by a clockmaker who was not ''free'' of the Clockmaker''s Company. It''s a ''once-in-a-lifetime'' opportunity!
Condition: The movement is in need of restoration and requires a pendulum bob, alarum crown wheel assembly and verge hammer, bell stand extension and nut (the bell is present), ropes and weights. There is rust to the steel parts however this can be removed. Only one unexplained hole can be found which is on the top plate, it is threaded and was probably the original bell stand fixing point.
The dial is crudely made but in sound condition. The silvering to the chapter ring and setting disc has worn off.
The oak case is substantially made and in very good condition. Historical repairs have been carried out to it and there is also evidence of historical woodworm to the top of the backboard. We have carefully cleaned the case during inspection and it is of good colour. The glass has been replaced at some point.
Price: The price is for the clock in its present condition. A price and timescale for any work required by the purchaser can be advised upon enquiry.
