Large Fusee 'Drop-dial' Wall Clock by Gillett & Johnston, Croydon. Mahogany Case. Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

This is an imposing and substantial clock with an excellent colour and patina.

The substantial, 8 day duration, chain fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and the backplate being stamped with the serial number 12724.

Behind a flat, 14" diameter, painted iron dial with an outer minute track with triangular hour markings and inner, black Roman hour numerals. The upper centre bears the maker's signature written in a curve of "GILLETT & JOHNSTON" below the capitals of "V. R." (Victoria Regina). The lower portion bears the firm's location of "CROYDON". The blackened steel hands are of typically Turret clock spade style. The dial is behind a heavily cast brass locking bezel with a sight ring and snapped-in flat glass.

Contained in a likewise substantial mahogany 'Drop' case of excellent colour, patina and condition. The dial surround is quarter rounded and the well-figured trunk has integral shaped ears. The bottom is curved with a curved and cockbeaded locking door. The right side of the case has an access door.

The firm of Gillett & Johnston is still in existence and were a globally known firm of Turret clock makers throughout their existence. Historically they were extremely successful.

Condition: The dial and background is excellent but the black inking is worn - there are areas of the minute track that have worn off and the typical star configuration between the "V.R" has been rubbed off however these can still be made out and the dial would be greatly enhanced if the worn areas were re-inked professionally. The hands are excellent and the bezel is undamaged with a working lock to the surround. The glass may be a replacement. The movement is in good working order and fairly clean, the pendulum rod has been botched and would benefit from a tidying up. The case is excellent and has a good patina throughout, the lower door lock is present and working.

Price: The price is for the clock in its present and working condition. If the purchaser would like any work carrying out then a price and timescale can be advised upon enquiry.
