ANTIQUE #SA893399

A Very Rare, Northern Lantern Clock By William Raynes Of York. Circa 1680.

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: M. C. Taylor

This is an exceptionally rare chamber clock.

Though incomplete and in very worn condition it is the rarity of this example that is important. It is one of probably only three in existence made by Raynes during his latter ''York period''.

Originally made with a ''between the trains'' internal, verge pendulum it was converted very early on in its life to ''Anchor Recoil'' escapement with a rear mounted pendulum The iron back cock is typically northern.

This clock is absolutely typical of this maker, place and period even down to the ''angry dolphins'' engraved on the fret! Clearly, the engraving was carried by the same hand as were other clocks made by other makers suggesting that they all used the same engraver. Though incomplete and not in working order, the patina and appearance of this clock is very pleasing and tactile - many hands have touched and felt it over the years and there is a distinct lack of dust to prove this; it is incredibly smooth to the touch.
