Brass latch, pair of carrying handles and 4 hinges, opens with a pair of leather straps to hold the lid open, label to the inside of the lid.

China, circa 1920

Condition: Externally age toned and the lacquer dulled with some signs of use to extremities, internally shiny black lacquer.

Lacquered leather trunks were widely produced in China during the late Qing Dynasty for storing textiles, fine garments, and personal effects during travel or household storage. The combination of leather wrapping and lacquer coating provided a durable, water-resistant exterior.

These trunks feature a solid wood inner structure, often made from pine or camphor wood. The exterior is wrapped in stretched hide or leather, coated with natural lacquer, and reinforced with hand-cut brass plates, hinges, and carrying handles.
