A highly unusual early English carriage timepiece in a patinated cast bronze and engraved case with parcel gilt detail, with a silvered roman dial blued steel moon hands within a gilded and chased bazel. The english lever platform escapement is visible through the glazed top panel, this item still retains its original velvet lined rosewood carrying case, and winding key. The clock is wound and set through the covered key holes on the back.
The case is subtly engraved with foliate scrolls around the dial and beautifully patinated and gilded both in excellent original condition, including the carrying handle.
A similar clock sold last year with the same case and dial signed by Payne and Co, with the same letter B stamped on the base, leading us to conclude that this clock is from the same workshop and therefore, more than likely an unsigned Payne and Co Clock.
William Payne is first recorded at 62 South Moulton Street London in 1816. By 1825 he haD moved to 163 New Bond Street w...here the company remains until the 20th century. William Payne & Company, watch, clock and pedometer makers are first recorded there in 1852, Also Known as Payne & Co. Examples of Payne and Co’s work can be found in the the Royal Collection.
