Tregent, London. Break Arch Bracket Clock Ebonised Case Silvered Dial
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:M. C. Taylor
A good example of a break-arch, ebonised table clock by a fine maker.
The substantial five pillar, double gut fusee movement with rack and star wheel striking the hours on a top-mounted high quality bell and Half-Deadbeat anchor escapement. Also having strike/silent, pull repeat pendulum transit bracket and the backplate is beautifully signed ''James Tregent, London'' in script.
Behind a 7'' wide, silvered brass break-arch dial. With a strike/silent select dial to the arch and the main chapter having an outer ring, Arabic 5''s, divided minute ring and inner Roman hour numerals. The centre has a lower calendar date dial which is segmented and having inner, Arabic three day numerals. The upper centre is exquisitely signed ''Ja''s Tregent, Watchmaker to the Prince of Wales. London''. The blued steel time hands are of ''open diamond'' style.
Contained in a well-constructed ebonised case. The break-arch top has a single pad on which is fixed a cast brass carrying handle. The top ha...s a fine, returned moulding all around and sits over both full-size locking and glazed doors the front of which has a brass quadrant frame to the glass. The plain sides have high, arch, brass fish-scale sound frets that are backed with cloth. The all around short plinth has a moulded top and sits upon four cast brass, splayed feet.
The half Dead-beat escapement embodies actions contained in both the Dead-beat and Anchor Recoil escapements. it is a very admirable escapement for table clocks because it gives good performance with 6'' to 10'' long pendulums. It is considered to be a kind of self-compensating escapement.
James Tregent is considered a famous Clockmaker. He was a member of the Clockmaker''s Company from 1781 until 1808.
The clock is basically original and untouched - it is a splendid example of how a clock would look if just used for 250 years! The case and dial appear never to have been worked on but the movement however has been maintained and though not overhauled by us is in good working order throughout.
The price is for the clock in its present and working condition however, we always suggest an overhaul and a price for this or any other restoration required by the purchaser can be advised upon contacting us. If we had the time to fully restore this clock then it''s true retail value would be in the region of £8000.
