Also having a Strike/Silent facility and though disabled, hour pull repeating. The backplate and back cock are engraved in floral Rococo style.
Behind a finely executed, 7" wide, brass break-arch dial with cast brass Rococo spandrels to the corners and arch, a silvered chapter ring with outer Arabic 5's, a minute track and short Roman hour numerals. The arch carries the Strike/Silent selecting chapter and both have finely matted centres. The arch is bordered with the silvered maker's nameplate bearing "DANIEL VAUGUION LONDON". The lower dial centre has a rectangular and chamfered calendar date aperture and the blued steel hands are particularly finely cut.
The mahogany case is well figured and of a rich colour and patina. It has an inverted bell top which has a cast brass, swinging carrying handle. The two-tiered top terminates with a rim moulding adjoining the flat trunk top which then has a complicated returned moulding. The locking and glazed front door is of full-size with quarter moulded edges, an applied frame to the glass and wooden sound frets to the upper quadrants. The case sides have glazed upper circular apertures over rectangular apertures with conforming concave tops. The rear has a locking and glazed door with a break-arch aperture below quadrants. All mouldings are carried around the case and the short plinth has a Cavetto top moulding and sits upon four, cast brass 'Ogee' feet.
The whole appearance of this clock is sumptuous and it has some of the finest veneers I have seen. It did originally have a Verge escapement but has been converted, like so many have, to improve the timekeeping. If restored, the Verge escapement could be re-instated as could the pull repeating for the hours. Daniel Vauguion (1760-93) is listed in Brittens 'Old Clocks and Watches and their makers' as operating from Spring Gardens, Charing Cross 1760-93, clock and watch maker 'to the Duke of Gloucester & Prince Henry'.
Originally, these clocks could be carefully carried from room to room still ticking as to not lose any time because of their very robust 'Verge' escapement with attached pendulum or, more importantly, to the bed chamber at night whereas the silent option would be selected so the sleeper would not be awoken at each and every hour. If the time was required then the repeat cord would be tugged and the previous hour struck would be sounded.
The movement is in working condition but does require and overhaul/restoration and as mentioned, the escapement has been changed and the repeating disabled. The dial is excellent with minor staining. The case is simply fabulous but the rear glass is a replacement and has chips.
The price is for the clock in its present working condition and any work required by the purchaser and timescales can be discussed upon enquiry.
The fully restored and re-instatement of the escapement price of this fabulous clock will be in the region of £12,000.
