This handsome oak Longcase clock dates from circa 1780. Made By Charles Robotham of Leicester, with beautifully engraved brass and silvered dial, and finely fretted blued steel hands of serpentine design. The dial has unusual chinoiserie influenced 5 minute markers and rococo spandrels.
The eight day, four knopped pillar movement, rack striking the hours on a single bell has an anchor recoil escapement.
This imposing case has been exquisitely carved with neoclassical grotesques, and has fine fluted corinthian columns with cast brass capitols flanking the hood.
Although Robotham is not listed in either volume of Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, British Clockmakers'' & Watchmakers'' Apprentices records him taking six apprentices between 1780 and 1796. and there are several extant examples of his work of which this must be one of the most impressive.
