A Small Rare, Fusee, English Drop-dial Wall Clock Bowed Dial in a Mahogany Case. Circa 1845.

19th century
Description

An extremely rare English wall clock of diminutive size.

The eight day duration, gut fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, knopped pillars and shouldered plates.

Behind only a 9" diameter, bowed painted iron dial with outer minute track encompassing Roman hour numerals. Also with matching 'Open moon' steel hands and a cast brass, locking bezel with bowed glass.

In a mahogany drop-trunk case with a turned, one-piece narrow dial surround. The trunk having flat and carved ears and a shaped pendulum viewing aperture that is glazed with a cast brass frame. The rounded bottom has a curved and cockbeaded locking door.

You have seen this type of clock before but probably not as small as this one - I certainly haven't. It is totally original and if you collect Dial clocks then this one will be a must. The first picture shows it next to another example with the standard 12" diameter dial.

The movement is working and keeping time but really would benefit from an overhaul and new gut line. The dial has its original base paint that has the usual shrinkage cracks but has been poorly touched in as has the black inking and would be improved with either a full or partial repaint and inking. The case is in good condition considering its age. The bezel and lower door locks are present but the keys are missing as is the back wooden lock cover to the dial surround. One of the surround pegs is original and two are poor replacements (the fourth is missing). There is slight damage to the case but on the whole it is good.

The price is for the item in its present and working condition. Any work required by the purchaser can be discussed upon enquiry. I estimate that the restored retail value of this rare clock would be around £4750.
