This is a very attractive and original example of a true Bracket clock.
The eight day duration, 5 knopped pillared, double fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, rack striking the hours and halfs on a rear-mounted bell. Also having shouldered plates, pendulum transit bracket, strike/silent, pull-repeating the hours and micrometer pendulum regulation.
Behind an 8'' diameter, bowed, painted iron dial with original paintwork and black inked outer minute track and Roman hour numerals also, the maker''s name of ''Wm. COXHEAD, MARKET PLACE, READING'' in curved script above and below the dial centre. The ringed, arrowhead matching hands are particularly well executed and all behind a cast brass locking bezel with bowed glass.
Contained in a Rosewood veneered case with brass inlay to the front. The Arabian style pagoda pediment has a cast brass ball-and-cup finial and it has a flat boarded top which is copied to the edge tops to the Cavetto neck. The pediment sits upon ribbed m
...oulding and the trunk front has a recessed and shaped panel that is edged with a cast brass quadrant frame. The front sides are ribbed and scrolled and the case has a short, straight plinth that sits upon four brass ball feet. The sides have ringed lions mask handles over cast brass Arabian arched sound frets that are backed with gold cloth. The rear locking door is glazed with ''Blood glass''. The original wall bracket is of conforming style, quality and colour to the case.
The bracket measures 32.38cm wide x 15.875cm deep. The total height of the clock on the bracket is 66.675cm.
This is a good and original example of an early Victorian bracket clock. The maker is listed as working from 1830 until 1877.
The clock and its bracket are totally original. There are signs of only minor historical repairs and slight damage, such as on the rear door to the case and bracket. Both locks are working. The dial has historical touching up of the base paint and the inking is worn. The movement is in really good working condition but really would benefit from an overhaul, however it keeps good time and the striking, repeating and silent are working correctly. The original French polish finish is exceptionally good.
