A Georgian, Verge Escapement Bracket Clock In An Ebonised Case By Richard Young, London. Circa 1785.
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:M. C. Taylor
This is an attractive table clock with clean, simple lines.
The eight day duration, 5 pillar movement with attached pendulum Verge escapement and rack striking the hours on a top-mounted bell. Also having strike/silent, a repeat-at-will striking pull cord and a fully engraved backplate that is filled with fronded floral designs. The back cock and apron are also engraved.
Behind a 7'' wide, break-arch silvered brass dial. The arch bears a STRIKE/SILENT dial with a blued steel setting hand and the main dial has an outer ring, Arabic five minute numerals, divided minute track and inner, Roman hour numerals. The centre is flamboyantly signed for the maker ''Richard Young'' (of) ''London'' and the lower portion has a square and chamfered calendar date aperture. The blued steel hands are of Serpentine style.
Contained in a very cleanly styled ebonised, fruitwood veneered oak case. The break-arch single pad top with cast brass quadrant framing has a cast brass swinging carrying handl...e and the top is all-around return moulded. The full-size locking front door has cast brass quadrant framing the glazing and the case sides have large rectangular, concave top apertures with cloth-backed wooden frets. The rear locking door is also glazed and of full-size. The short plinth has a moulded top and the case sits upon four, cast brass Ogee feet. The pull repeat cord exits from the lower right side.
Originally, these clocks could be carefully carried from room to room - still ticking as to not lose any time because of their very robust ''Verge'' escapement with attached pendulum or more importantly, to the bed chamber at night whereas the silent option would be selected so the sleeper would not be awoken at each and every hour but if the approximate hour was required then the user would simply tug on the repeat cord, this would make the clock strike the number of hours passed.
The case and dial are excellent, though the dial would benefit from re-waxing. This is an original clock, however the movement does not run consistently because it requires a complete overhaul/restoration due to neglect. Should the movement be restored the retail value of this clock would be approximately £7,000. Restoration could be carried out by us but would cost extra and would have to be placed on our waiting list. A price for any work required can be supplied upon request.
The price is for the clock in its present condition.
