Description

A beautifully proportioned 18th century Welsh oak panelled coffer, or blanket box, with a lovely warm tone and richly developed patina. The front is decorated with three elegant arched panels, framed by moulded rails, and raised on sturdy stile feet. The wonderful colour and character of the oak are a real feature of this piece, with a pleasing depth of colour, natural grain and mellow surface patina that can only be achieved through age. Its simple, well-balanced design gives it an understated presence, while the proportions make it both an attractive and practical piece of antique furniture. The hinged lid opens to reveal a spacious interior, making this an ideal blanket chest or useful storage piece for the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Welsh oak coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring panelled construction, traditionally crafted in Wales during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for storing textiles and household linens.

Eighteenth-century coffers were built using solid oak timber joined with mortise and tenon joints, secured with wooden pegs, and frequently finished with raised field panels and brass escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed surfaces, pegged joinery, signs of historical wear around the base, irregular timber grain, and original iron or brass keyhole escutcheons.

An antique coffer functions as functional storage in an entryway, an occasional table in a living room, or a linen chest placed at the foot of a bed.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice per year to preserve the wood and protect its natural patina.
