This is a small English dial, fusee wall clock with an 8'' dial and mahogany case in excellent condition.
The eight day duration, chain fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and screwed pillars. The backplate bearing the serial number ''59561'' and bearing the trade mark of ''ASTRAL'' and ''COVENTRY'' within a winding key.
The cream painted, 8'' diameter iron dial has black Roman numerals, minute ring and steel ''spade'' hands. Also having a glazed brass bezel.
In a mahogany case of good patina and colour and having a side access door and a curved, cockbeaded, locking door to the curved bottom.
Astral was the trade name of H. Williamson Ltd. and the factory was located in Coventry. The chain fusee movement was the first type to be produced in Coventry in 1910 and production continued there up until 1932. The company amalgamated with Grimshaw, Baxter and JJ Elliott in 1921 to form English Clock & Watch Manufacturers of Coventry Ltd. This was subsequently sold to Smith
...s after it went into receivership in 1931 and Smiths continued to use the Astral trade name into the 1950s.
