A British Railways (western Region) 8" Fusee Dial Clock. Numbered 4957. Circa 1880

This is a very pretty and well-used mahogany English dial clock.
 
The eight day duration, chain fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, shaped pillars, high mounted barrel and substantial pendulum.
 
Behind an eight inch diameter painted iron dial with black Roman numerals, outer minute ring and marked ''B.R.-W.'' to the upper portion. Also having spade style steel hands and a cast brass bezel with a flat snapped-in glass.
 
The small mahogany case has a convex moulded dial surround, side access door and rounded bottom with a conforming cockbeaded door (lock missing). The left hand side of the backbox carries an ivorine plate bearing ''B.R - W.R 4957''.

Batch 4944 - 5095 can be traced to some extent.
 
Made circa 1880 for the North Eastern Railway and supplied to a station beginning with ''M''.
 
Absorbed by the LNER and repainted at Reading GWR workshops in circa 1923.
