This is a very pretty and well-used mahogany English dial clock.
The eight day duration, chain fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, shaped pillars, high mounted barrel and substantial pendulum.
Behind an eight inch diameter painted iron dial with black Roman numerals, outer minute ring and marked ''B.R.-W.'' to the upper portion. Also having spade style steel hands and a cast brass bezel with a flat snapped-in glass.
The small mahogany case has a convex moulded dial surround, side access door and rounded bottom with a conforming cockbeaded door (lock missing). The left hand side of the backbox carries an ivorine plate bearing ''B.R - W.R 4957''.
* BRWR 4957.
Batch 4944 - 5095 can be traced to some extent.
Made circa 1880 for the North Eastern Railway and supplied to a station beginning with ''M''.
Absorbed by the LNER and repainted at Reading GWR workshops in circa 1923.
The GWR was then absorbed by ''British Rail'' in circa 1948 and all clocks were rec
...alled to the Swindon workshops in circa 1951. The clocks were notoriously ''mixed and matched'' and then given ivorine plates. This example was probably well looked after because it has remained intact, original throughout and retained it''s original number. The GWR did not commission eight inch dials as standard so this is a desirable example. It was re-allocated to British Rail - Western Region and the dial lettering would have been added at Swindon.
The price is for the clock in present, well-used and maintained, working condition and any further restoration work that you require will be subject to a further cost and waiting time.
