An Eight Day Longcase Clock In A Plain Oak Case By B. Russell Of Norwich. Circa 1810 (long Case)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:M. C. Taylor
This is an extremely attractive clock of small and good proportions in exemplary condition.
The eight day duration movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and rack striking the hours on a top-mounted cast bell. Also having automatic phases-of-the-moon and calendar date.
Behind a 12'' wide, break-arch, painted iron moon-phase dial made by and the false-dial signed ''WALKER & FINNEMORE'' (Birmingham). The ringed chapter area having Roman numerals, minute dots and outer, Arabic fives. The centre having a conforming subsidiary seconds dial and a gilt edged, drop-mouth, calendar aperture above the maker''s name ''B. Russell (of) Norwich''. The colourfully painted moon disc also having cottage and warship-at sea-scenes within the arch outer that bears the sectioned, lunar date including the half. The ''moon hider'' spheres bear maps of the world. The corners of the dial-plate are decorated with green and gilt circular fan motifs, fern branches and a symmetrically painted inner border. T...he black steel hands are pierced and unusually, the minute hand has a spade tip (original).
Contained in an oak case of good colour and proportions. The break-arch top has three reeded blocks carrying ornate ball-and-spire brass finials and are connected by two shaped ''wavy top'' crests. The door sits under a small but well-formed moulding and the slightly bowed plain pillars have wooded capitals. The plain trunk has a full-length locking door with flat top and well formed edge moulding and terminates at both ends with a plain Cavetto moulding. The plain base has a shaped plinth.
This is a most attractive little clock that is typical of the Norwich style, it is totally original and the colour, patina and proportions would be hard to improve upon. For us, it ticks a lot of boxes and is exceptionally pleasing to the eye. We purchased it locally where it has stood in the same position, untouched since 1965.
AFTER-NOTE. This is one of those clocks that you could spend a lifetime looking for, everything about it is just right and it is extremely pretty. Though it is a modest example, it is one of our personal favourites. Squint at the first picture and see how perfect the silhouette is.
The purchased item can be collected at a time mutually agreed or if required, delivery can be arranged for which we are happy to provide a quotation.
