This large lidded porcelain jar dates from the 19th century in the Japanese Imari style. The piece possesses a fluted body finished in an enamel glaze of cobalt blue, iron red, and gold leaf, complemented by a finial lid, floral cartouches, and gilded trim. Visible details include intricate hand-painted exotic oriental floral decorations, birds, and decorative motifs running along the vertical panels and round lid. The vessel stands 76 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. Such a scale suits display upon a sideboard top within an English country house setting, where it functions as a striking decorative focal point in a living room or hallway.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramic ware produced in the Arita area and shipped from the port of Imari. Developed in the 17th century, it gained international recognition for its complex underglaze blue and overglaze enamel decoration.

Traditional Imari ware is crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures, and decorated using cobalt blue underglaze combined with overglaze enamels in iron red, gold, and occasionally green or aubergine.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-painted decoration with subtle brushwork variations, dark cobalt blue underglaze, dense floral or faunal panels, and natural wear to the gilded accents along rims and finials.

Position a large lidded Imari jar as a central focal point on a sideboard, console table, or fireplace hearth to introduce historic pattern and rich colour contrast against modern minimalist backdrops.

Dust regularly using a soft microfibre cloth or dry brush. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, or prolonged immersion in water, as overglaze enamels and gilding can wear away.
