De Dubbelde Schenkkan (1660-1770)

A stunning double gourde vase from the De Dubbelde Schenkkan (Double Jug Factory) factory with the mark of Louis Victor.

The decoration has a middle eastern theme with flowers in stylised frames and a row of cockerels through the centre. It's also unusual in its octagonal form.

The piece is marked to the base with LV the mark of Louis Victor who was the owner ofDe Dubbelde Schenkkan (Double Jug Factory) factory 1688-1715.

The vase is in good condition. Tin glaze always has areas of glaze flaking.

Delftware is tin-glazed earthenware produced in and around Delft in the Netherlands from the late sixteenth century onwards. Developed as a European response to imported Chinese Kraak porcelain, it became famous for its vibrant cobalt blue hand-painted decoration on a white glaze background.

Craftsmen shaped local clay on a wheel or in moulds before performing an initial biscuit firing. The piece was then dipped in an opaque white tin glaze, painted by hand with metal oxides such as cobalt, and fired a second time at high temperature to fuse the glaze and colours together.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-painted variations in cobalt blue intensity, minor glaze crawling or firing pinholes, soft reddish or beige clay exposed at unglazed bases, and historical maker marks or monograms painted beneath the glaze.

Blue and white ceramics create strong visual contrast against dark wood sideboards or crisp white mantelpieces. Grouping pieces of varying heights together creates an curated focal point in contemporary or traditional room schemes.
